When Jesus posed this question to His disciples, there was a lot of confusion among people as to who He was. Some people thought He was a prophet like Jeremiah or Elijah. Others thought He was John the Baptist, raised from the dead. Some of the religious leaders thought He was a crazy man or perhaps even demon-possessed. But some were getting the idea that He just might be the Messiah that had been prophesied about.
So, who do YOU believe Him to be? The question is more than just a poll to see what the various opinions are. How you answer that question changes EVERYTHING. You see, Jesus didn’t claim to be just a teacher, prophet, or healer. He claimed to be God in the flesh. He claimed to be The Path for mankind to find their way back to the Father. In John 14 Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Let the force of that sink in for a minute. You see, many people think that it really doesn’t matter WHAT you believe, as long as you believe SOMETHING. Which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. That’s like saying I can take any road I want to get to a particular destination as long as I BELIEVE that road will get me there. But you and I know that’s not so. My belief about something doesn’t change what is. The same with Jesus. In the words of C.S. Lewis, Jesus is either who He claimed to be, the Son of God, or He is a liar or a lunatic. He didn’t say He was one of many choices to find our way back to God. He said He was THE way back to God.
