“Divine Lenses”
I watched a video the other day of a 14-month-old child born with really poor eyesight. After recognizing that the child couldn’t see very well, the family took her to an optometrist who fitted her for glasses. She didn’t really like having the glasses put on her, but once they were in place, her little jaw hit the ground. She could SEE! She laughed and beamed as she saw her parents and the world around her clearly for the first time. I’m sure she never wanted to be without them again!
That’s what God’s Word and God’s Spirit do for us. They help us to see things clearly. They are the lenses of truth that enable us to see through the blurriness of the world’s chaos and confusion. They guide us through the dark times when it’s not as easy to find our way. They help us to distinguish between good and bad, right and wrong, and evil and righteousness. They bring illumination to see through the Enemy’s lies and deceptions. And they help us to see God in all His Goodness, Grace, and Glory.
But these Divine Lenses only help us if we use them! Notice that the psalmist points out that godly people utilize the lenses of God “day and night.” In other words, the lens of God’s Word isn’t useful to us if we simply read it in the morning and forget it the rest of the day. That would be like putting our glasses on our dresser and going off to work without them. Some of us couldn’t drive or even walk safely like that. The Word of God is meant to be an ongoing reflection, a constant reference, and an ever-present reminder of who we are, who God is, and who we are called to be. The same is true of the Spirit of God. He is our “ever-present help in our time of need.” But only if we live in an ongoing awareness of Him.
Do you find yourself stumbling a bit lately? Are you struggling to stay encouraged? Are you finding yourself growing weaker against temptation or being who you know God needs you to be? Maybe you are just forgetting your glasses. God’s Word and God’s Spirit are God’s gifts to you to help you see clearly, stand with steadiness, and walk with confidence. Put on your Divine Lenses—and KEEP THEM ON! Carry them in your heart and mind all day long. Then you’ll not only be able to SEE the truth. You’ll LIVE in it! That’s God’s Word for you today.
