“Walking Through the Psalms”

“The Invitation of a Lifetime”
Kids are so funny. Whenever our boys came home from school and we asked them how their day was, the answer was always the same. “Fine.” Then we would further try to engage them by asking a follow-up question, “What did you do today?” If you’re a parent, you know what they said. “Nothing.” And with that, they were off to their rooms, on their computers, or out the door with their friends. Sound familiar?
Most of us have probably asked, “Why do I even bother?” But we know the answer to that question. It’s because we love them. It’s because we care about how they’re doing and what they’re up to. It’s because we have dreams for them and hopes for them. It’s because we want them to know that we love them more than they will ever know and that we are ALWAYS there for them. They may think we’re just making conversation. But they couldn’t be more wrong. We would LOVE to hear their hearts, share their struggles, and counsel them on their journey. It’s just not easy for them to grasp all that.
It’s the same with God. God passionately cares about us. His great desire is to be personally involved in our world. When His Spirit nudges us to share with Him, talk with Him, or come to Him, it’s because He longs to hear our hearts. And He longs to share His Heart with us.
That’s why I love David’s words today. David knows what a treasure it is to have His Heavenly Father engaged in his world. So when he feels that nudge from God or hears the Lord speaking to his heart, he RUNS to Him! His response isn’t “fine” or “nothing,” it’s “LORD, I am coming!” My guess is that God’s face lights up to that kind of response, just like ours would if our children said it to us.
Let me say it again. God LONGS to be with you. He longs for you to come to Him, share with Him, and just BE with Him. I know you have other things to do and other places to go, but I assure you that there is no one in the entire universe who loves you more and can help you more than your Heavenly Father. When you sense God’s Spirit saying, “Come and talk with me,” run TO Him, not away from Him. It’s not the inquiry of a nosey parent. It’s actually the invitation of a lifetime. That’s God’s Word for you today.
