Powerful Words from the Prophets

“Perfect Peace”
This is one of those verses that would be worth committing to memory. I laughed when I read the phrase “perfect peace” because every conversation I had at church today was about the CHAOS going on in people’s lives. Chaos with their health. Chaos in their finances. Chaos in their marriage. Chaos with their kids. When our world seems like an out-of-control rollercoaster, how in the world do you remain in God’s perfect peace?
Well, Isaiah gives us a couple of clues. First, he says it’s possible for “all who trust in you.” Pay attention to this. It is GOD who keeps us in His perfect peace, not us. If peace depends on our ability to navigate life, then we will never have it, for we are always out of our depth. But God can keep us in that peace if we trust in Him.
So let me ask the question. Do you TRUST God? Do you trust God’s HEART? In other words, do you believe He is truly a God who loves you and wants what’s best for you? Do you believe that He is FOR you and WITH you—even when you are struggling to feel Him near? Do you trust God’s POWER? Do you truly believe that God can work in ANY circumstance—physical, relational, financial, mental, or emotional? And here’s one that you might struggle with. Do you trust God’s PLAN? When Paul says that “in all things God works for the good of those who love Him,” do you rest in that? Sometimes I’ve found that our trust in God is contingent on God working according to OUR plans, not His. You can’t experience God’s peace if you don’t trust God.
The second clue is found in the phrase, “all whose thoughts are fixed on you.” The word “thoughts” would be better translated as “imaginations.” You see, it’s our imagination that leads us into chaos or back into God’s peace. If we allow ourselves to dwell on imagining the worst, guess what? We forfeit our peace. If our imagination leads us to dwell in places of anxiety, stress, or fear, our peace fades fast. But if our imagination goes to who God is, what God has done, and what God can do, our hearts and minds are pulled back into His perfect peace.
Read our verse today one more time. “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” Renew your trust in God who holds you in the palm of His Hand. Fix your imagination on the goodness of God, the power of God, and the great love of God. Leave your chaos at the door of the sanctuary of God’s Perfect Peace. That’s God’s Word for you today.
