Powerful Words from the Prophets
“The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.” – Isaiah 11:2-3 (NLT)

“Resting on the Spirit”
Yesterday, we looked at how the Spirit of God rested on Jesus in all of His fullness. Jesus was filled with “wisdom and understanding, counsel and might, knowledge and fear of the Lord.” It was what made Jesus who He was and empowered Him to do what He did. But here’s the amazing part we didn’t explore yesterday: That same Spirit lives in US!
WE have access to the wisdom and understanding of God. WE can live with power and victory. WE can walk in harmony with God, doing His will and serving His purposes. The key is in fully tapping into the Spirit of God. That’s why Jesus spent so much time talking to the disciples about the Holy Spirit in John 16. He calls Him the “Advocate” or “Counselor.” The Greek word is “parakletos.” It means “one who is called alongside as a helper or a guide.” Please don’t miss this. The Holy Spirit is the power and presence of God that does for us and through us what He did for Jesus. We can’t be who we’re called to be or do what God calls us to do without Him. HE is our source of strength. HE is our source of wisdom. HE is the one who opens doors, touches hearts, and changes lives. HE is the one who heals, comforts, and convicts.
This is the biggest defining difference between followers of Christ who live victorious lives and those who don’t. Those who are walking in power and victory in their lives are seeking the Spirit, listening to the Spirit, and obeying the Spirit. They don’t see prayer as an obligation or ritual exercise. They see it as a chance to plug into the charging station of God’s Spirit. It is their opportunity to yield their way to His way and to open themselves to the guidance and help of God. It is the recognition of what Jesus meant in John 15 when He said, “I am the Vine, and you are the branches. Apart from me, you can do nothing. But if you abide in me and my word abides in you, you will bear much fruit.”
Sit with this thought today. Do you seek God’s Spirit with openness, humility, and diligence? Do you listen for the whispers of the Spirit as He speaks to you throughout the day? And when you hear the voice of the Spirit, do you respond with immediate obedience? Paul said it best in Galatians 5:25. “Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.” The Spirit rested on Jesus. Let you and me rest our lives on the Spirit. That’s God’s Word for you today.
