“God’s Welcome Mat of Love”
God makes me worthy. Look in the mirror and say that out loud. Now say it again. It’s an important understanding. If you’re like me, there are lots of days that you know you’ve fallen short, not been the best version of yourself, or have downright fallen flat on your face. It’s hard to muster the strength to look at yourself in the mirror, much less try to look into the face of God. Shame can be a heavy weight. It can also be one of the best tools of the Enemy. But God doesn’t welcome us into His Presence because of our perfect performance. He welcomes us because of His Love. Pause on that for a moment. We don’t get to be with God because of who we are. We get to be with Him because of who He is.
Just before the passage that we’re looking at today, David talked about the people who weren’t welcomed into the presence of God. He talked about evil people who have no interest in the Holy One. He talked about proud people who think God ought to be excited to be in THEIR presence. David may have been thinking about people he knew and may have even been venting a bit. But then I think David felt a strong tinge of guilt. He was no angel. He certainly had skeletons of sin in his closet of adultery and murder. He, too, had once walked in pride and felt privileged and entitled. But as the Enemy wrapped him in that blanket of shame and tried to make David believe he was just like the rest, David remembered he was not. He had been broken by God. He had been forgiven by God. He realized again that he could come before God, not because he had lived a great life but because he had surrendered his past to a Gracious God. God’s great love was the welcome mat that David walked on as he came before the Lord.
God’s love welcomes YOU today. Not because you’re perfect, but because God is. If you feel unworthy, it’s because you are. You’ll never live a good enough life to earn a place at the table of the Lord. The good news is, you don’t have to! God’s not looking for perfect lives. He’s looking for broken and humble hearts. He welcomes those who long for Him, who want to be with Him, and who know how desperately they need Him. Take a moment and say it again. “God makes me worthy.” His welcome mat of love is laid out for YOU! That’s God’s Word for you today.
