Powerful Words from the Prophets
“Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD GOD is the eternal Rock.” – Isaiah 26:4 (NLT)
“Our Eternal Rock”
“Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD GOD is the eternal Rock.” – Isaiah 26:4 (NLT)
“Our Eternal Rock”
One of the Christmas gifts I asked for and got this year is an Oklahoma City Thunder jersey that I can wear to games to show my support. Whose jersey did I get, you ask? My own. It’s got the number I wore in college (44) and my name across the back. The reason I did that is that the other two jerseys I have bought in the past with players’ names and numbers on them got traded. So I have two expensive jerseys in my closet that I can’t wear. The Thunder can’t trade me, so a jersey with my name on it is safe!
Getting traded isn’t a Thunder issue. It’s a pro sports issue. Athletes are commodities who have learned their future is never secure. Teams change, needs change, finances change, and athletic ability changes. So it’s not a question of IF you’ll be traded, it’s WHEN. One player named Ish Smith played for 13 different teams in the NBA. That’s nearly HALF of the league!
But maybe the NBA is just a reflection of life. Things we count on change all the time, don’t they? My father worked for 3 different factories that all closed down before he retired. When the oil market crashed back in the 1980’s, over 1600 banks either closed or had to receive FDIC financial assistance. Who among us hasn’t had friends or family in our lives who said we could always count on them, only to find that we can’t?
That’s why I think our verse today is so incredibly important and comforting. You can trust God ALWAYS. He is our Eternal Rock. What does that mean? It means EVERYTHING! It means God is DEPENDABLE. He will always be there when you need Him. It means that God is FAITHFUL. He stays true to us, even when we become a bit flakey at times with Him. It means God doesn’t change. Unlike people who are up and down, high and low, moody and mellow, God is Steady Eddie. No matter what we’re going through, He is the same. The same heart. The same character. The same nature. Yesterday, today, and forever.
So if you’re feeling a bit like Ish Smith today, like you’re being bounced around in every part of life, hang in there. Life changes. Things change. But God is your Eternal Rock whom you can always cling to. Put your trust in Him. That’s God’s Word for you today.
