Powerful Words from the Prophets
“But you are a tower of refuge to the poor, O LORD, a tower of refuge to the needy in distress. You are a refuge from the storm and a shelter from the heat.” – Isaiah 25:4 (NLT)

“The Storm Shelter”
When we have guests visit us from other states, they often want to see videos of some of the big tornadoes that have come through here. And we’ve had a few. From the widest tornado ever measured to the one with the highest wind speeds ever measured on earth, Oklahoma is called “Tornado Alley” for a reason.
Guests who come to our home like to see the storm shelter that we have in our backyard. It’s a concrete and steel underground room that we get in when tornadoes come our way. When the installers were putting it in, Wanda asked one of the men how many people we could fit in it. His answer was, “It depends on how big the storm is!” Great answer. And we’ve been in that storm shelter a few times. It’s not the most comfortable room we own, but it sure is the safest!
Isaiah reminds us in our passage today that God is our shelter in times of storms and trials. When trouble comes our way, it’s best to run to Him than to try to outrun the storm. As many people have discovered in Oklahoma, big storms aren’t something you want to try to face on your own. You may think you know best about how to handle them. But do it enough times, and you’ll discover that sooner or later, you’ll face a storm that’s way bigger than you.
Maybe some of you are there right now. Maybe you’re facing a storm that’s got you running for cover. It’s big. It’s dark. And it’s scary. Maybe you’re facing a storm more menacing than any you’ve faced before, and you don’t know what to do. Or perhaps you feel as if you’re in your own “Tornado Alley” as you’ve had to face storm after storm after storm. Sometimes life just happens that way. But rest assured today, God is a shelter you can count on. He is a tried and tested refuge for you to run to. He is stronger than any storm you’re facing and can see you through whatever it is you’re dealing with. And the best part of all? He’s big enough to take care of ALL OF YOU, no matter how many there are. Tornado season is about to kick off before long here in Oklahoma. Our shelter will be ready. When your stormy season of life hits, I hope you have a Shelter to hide in, too! That’s God’s Word for you today.
