“Walking Through the Psalms”
“When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—the moon and the stars you set in place—what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?” – Psalm 8:3-4 (NLT)
“God’s Speck”

“God’s Speck”
We’re just a speck. Each of us is but a single person on a planet of over eight billion people. If that doesn’t make you feel insignificant enough, our planet is but a speck in our galaxy called The Milky Way. How big is the Milky Way? Well, it’s made of billions of stars and planets, and if you wanted to zoom across it, it would take you 100,000 years traveling at the speed of light (186,000 miles a second). And the Milky Way is but one galaxy of maybe a TRILLION or more galaxies that make up what we call the universe! Feel small yet?
Thinking about all that gives you a sense of what was going through David’s mind when he wrote our passage for today. In the night sky while he was tending sheep he would look up and just catch a glimpse of the immensity of the universe that we know now. What he knew was that there were more stars than he could count. What he knew was that it was spread out wider than he could see. What he knew was that compared to all that, he was TINY. Barely even noticeable.
But what he also knew was that he WAS seen. He was noticed by God. Imagine being in a crowd of thousands at a concert of the world’s most famous musician or singer. And suddenly that singer says, “I want to bring my good friend on stage to join me.” Then that singer calls you by name. “They KNOW me?” you think to yourself. “They SEE me?” It takes your breath away. That’s what David was experiencing. The overwhelming sense of being so little but being noticed by the most important being in all the universe.
That’s YOU today. In the vastness of all that is, you are tiny. VERY tiny. But God sees you. God knows you. Out of all the other things that exist to catch His attention, He never loses focus on YOU. You may feel small. You may feel insignificant. You may feel as if you are but a speck in all that is. And you’re right. But you’re God’s Speck. And that makes you pretty important. That’s God’s Word for you today.
