“Walking Through the Psalms”
“O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens.” – Psalm 8:1 (NLT)
“Think Magnificently of God”
“O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens.” – Psalm 8:1 (NLT)
“Think Magnificently of God”
“First of all, my child, think magnificently of God. Magnify His providence; adore His power, pray to Him frequently and incessantly. Bear Him always in your mind. Teach your thoughts to reverence Him in every place for there is no place where He is not. Therefore, my child, fear and worship and love God; first and last, think magnificently of Him!” —PATERNUS, ADVICE TO A SON
What wonderful advice! Advice that David follows in Psalm 8. In this psalm, David pens some amazing thoughts about who we are. But he wraps those thoughts between two powerful statements about who God is. “O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!” David talks about humankind in this psalm in relationship to God. So we will never really understand the significance and worth of our lives until we understand the magnificence of God. Read that last sentence again before you read any further. How we think of God determines how we think of US.
David uses the word “majestic.” It’s a royal term. It’s a word that lets us know that God is no ordinary king. He is the King of Kings. Kings often measure their significance by the size of their kingdom. God is King over all that is. Other kings measure themselves by their amount of wealth. God created it all, so God OWNS it all. Some kings measure themselves by the size of their army and their power. God is the King of the Armies of Heaven. There is no limit to His Kingdom. There is no number to measure His wealth. And there is no end to His power. No other king compares.
Some kings are known for how fierce they are. God is known by His Grace. Some kings pride themselves on being aloof, distant, and separate from those they rule. God is known as the King who walked among us and became one of us. Many kings are known for asking their subjects to sacrifice for them, even die for them. Our King made Himself a sacrifice and died for us. Many kings have been considered “mighty.” Only God is MAJESTIC.
I leave you today with the quote I began with. “First of all, my child, think magnificently of God. Magnify His providence; adore His power, pray to Him frequently and incessantly.
