“Walking Through the Psalms”

“My Faithful GPS”
A couple of years ago, I was driving from Oklahoma to Ohio. As I headed into Tulsa, my GPS wanted to take me around on a loop that I knew to be longer than just cutting through the middle of town. I smugly shook my head at the GPS and continued on the path that I knew to be a quicker one. Just past where the GPS was telling me to take the bypass, I started on the road through the middle of town. Not two minutes on that route, traffic slowed to a crawl. There was construction, and the three-lane highway was reduced down to one. My “shorter” route probably took me a good half-hour to 45 minutes longer. I went from smug to humbled in a hurry.
Can I confess? I sometimes do that with God. He offers me guidance, but sometimes I feel so confident I know what I’m doing and where I’m going that I feel as if I don’t need to consult Him. So off I go. My pride and my ignorance become my own self-imposed darkness, and my excursions without God’s guidance are much like my excursions without GPS. I end up going in circles, wondering where I am and how I got there. That’s not the smartest way to operate.
David reminds us in this Psalm that God is our “lamp.” He lights up our darkness and shows us the way before us. He can show us where we are. He can show us where we’re going. He can show us where we NEED to go. He can also show us the best way to get there. God desires to be more than our Savior. He also desires to be our Guide. His ways are not always the way we would choose. Sometimes they seem longer and certainly not always the easiest. But His ways are always BEST. They may not always make sense to you. But trust Him. He knows how to navigate these highways much better than you do.
So if you’re a bit hard-headed like me and now find yourself stuck somewhere and not sure what to do, call out to Him. Ask Him to light the way before you and show you how to get back on the right track. He loves you. He’ll be your lamp and your light. He’ll be your GPS to show you the way. But this time, you might want to listen to Him! That’s God’s Word for you today.
