“The Giver of All Good Gifts”
I want to challenge you today to make our passage your prayer for the day. But before you pray that prayer, take a moment. Think about the things in your life that are truly good—truly valuable things. How many of those things do you believe are gifts of God? Most of us would say, “All of them.” Spending time on that realization can change your perspective and change your life. How? Glad you asked.
It’ll make you realize how blessed you are. “Blessed.” Is that a word you use to describe your life? It should be. Most of us have so much to be thankful for. Do you have reasonably good health? You’re blessed! Do you have people in your life who love you? You’re blessed! Do you have a home to live in, a car to drive, and do you get enough to eat? You’re blessed! Most of the things we take for granted are things many people in the world don’t have. These gifts of God are treasures. We are BLESSED!
Reflecting on the good things that have come from God’s hand also has a humbling effect. It reminds us that we haven’t received these gifts because WE are good but rather because GOD is good! We didn’t earn them. We don’t deserve them. They are gifts of love. They are gifts of grace. They are a reminder that we have a God who loves to shower His children with good things. Remembering that keeps our chests from swelling with pride and instead keeps our heads bowed in grateful humility.
There’s one more thing this time of reflection will do. It will help us to trust God more. Remembering what He has done gives us confidence and faith in what He will do. He who has watched over us in the past, will care for us today, and will be there for us tomorrow. It’s amazing how anxiety and worry melt away when we’re able to rest in the goodness of God. He is our Master. He is our Overseer. He is our Provider. He who has gotten us this far will see us through to the end.
After you’ve spent some time marveling at the good gifts God’s poured into your life, make this prayer your own. Lift your eyes toward heaven, and with a grateful heart say, “You are my Master! Every good thing I have comes from you.” Now live today in the security of the goodness of God. That’s God’s Word for you today.
