“Walking Through the Psalms”
“You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength, silencing your enemies and all who oppose you.” – Psalm 8:2 (NLT)

“God and the Kids”
How great is God? Well, He’s so great that He doesn’t have to use the biggest, the strongest, or the best to accomplish His will. Sometimes, when He wants to really show us who He is, He uses kids.
When David wrote today’s passage, I don’t think he realized that it was going to be a prophetic statement. I think David was thinking about the past. Do you remember where the people of God were before they came to the Promised Land? They were in Egypt. They went there when Joseph became second in command and brought his father and brothers and their families to escape the famine. But after they were settled, and Joseph died, another king rose up in Egypt and feared the Israelites and how quickly they were multiplying. So they made slaves out of God’s people and decreed that all newborn boys would be put to death.
But one special little baby slipped through. His mother had the baby boy’s sister put him in a basket, and he floated in the river among the reeds. When the Princess came out to bathe, she heard the baby crying and had one of her handmaidens bring him to her. The Princess took the baby in to be her own and raised him in the palace. That baby’s name was Moses. He became the leader that God used to break the back of the Pharoah of Egypt and set the people of God free. One harmless baby became the Hand of Vengeance of the Lord God Almighty.
But as I mentioned before, this passage was also a prophetic verse. Jesus quotes it in Matthew 21 as children are praising Him as the Messiah and calling Him the “Son of David.” When the religious leaders get offended, Jesus uses this verse as an affirmation that what the children are saying is true. God used harmless children to declare a revolutionary truth. The Kingdom of God had come!
So relax. You who are waiting for some big move of God or some fantastic demonstration of God’s power in your midst. God doesn’t need the great, the incredible, or the exceptional. God doesn’t usually work in the ways we think He will. He uses the simple. He uses the common. His moves are often subtle and quiet, not loud and flashy. In fact, many people don’t even notice when God is up to something great. They had no idea that crying baby was the Liberator of Israel. And those religious leaders had no idea those praising children in the temple were actually prophets. Sometimes the greatest moves of God are not God and an army. It’s God and the kids. That’s God’s Word for you today.
