“Walking Through the Psalms”
“I have all that I need.” – Psalm 23:1b
“God Has All You Need”
“I have all that I need.” – Psalm 23:1b
“God Has All You Need”
I love this proclamation by David. After picturing God as a caring “Shepherd,” he makes this bold, defining statement. “I have all that I need.” Notice that David doesn’t say that he has all he WANTS. That’s a different matter altogether. You know how sheep are. Their eyes wander. Their desires are endless. All they have to do is spot a little greener grass across the way, and suddenly their grass doesn’t taste so good anymore. But David brings us back to a reality we can’t afford to miss. All we need, REALLY need, is right here with the Shepherd. Let’s unpack that together.
God meets our deep need for the Supernatural. There is, in every person in every culture, a sense of the Divine. Many people don’t always know WHAT it is, or WHO it is, but they know SOMETHING is there. They often even create images and ideas of who or what they think that Divine entity might be like. But there’s no need to. God has revealed Himself to us through the Scriptures. And, more directly, through Jesus Christ. He fills that empty void in our soul that longs to know where it’s from.
God meets our deep need for Friendship. God walked with Adam in the Garden and desires to walk with us each day. He’s there to listen, to encourage, and to share our joys and our sorrows. He’s the Friend who “sticks closer than a brother.” We are NEVER alone.
He also meets our deep need for Significance. God gives our lives meaning and purpose. When we come to know Him as Savior and Lord, it is not simply about taking care of our soiled past. It is also the paving of a brand-new future. He empowers us to do greater things than we ever imagined. He lets us partner with Him in His amazing work here on earth.
Can I give you one more? God meets our need to know “what’s next?” What happens after we die? Is this life all there is? These questions plague the heart of every human from the day they are old enough to comprehend death. God answers those questions and allays those fears. To a man who cried out to Jesus, breathing his last breath, Jesus gave this assurance: “Today you will be with me in Paradise.” What’s next? Eternity. God gives us that assurance.
So if you have wants today that you’d like God to take care of, go ahead and ask Him for them. He loves you and sometimes gives you what you want. But if He doesn’t give you all you want, don’t let it get you down. You can be assured He already has all you NEED. That’s God’s Word for you today.
