“Walking Through the Psalms”

“A Sure Thing”
Have you ever noticed how unsteady and unpredictable everything seems to be? The world around us changes constantly, and things we thought were “certain” prove that they’re not. When I lived in Phoenix, the housing market went shooting through the roof. Home values were increasing at an exponential rate. People were buying properties as quickly as possible or selling their homes and moving into much more expensive homes as a “sure thing” investment. But you know what happened. The housing market crashed, and people who thought they would turn a quick profit ended up losing big time.
Or how about how quickly things can change with our health? Not long ago I woke up in the middle of the night with my right arm tingling. It was a strange feeling, but I thought my arm was just asleep. The tingling increased each day until it finally felt like excruciating painful waves of electricity shooting down my arm and making my hand feel as if it was on fire. I’d never felt pain like that. It was discovered that I had a severely compressed nerve in my elbow that required surgery to correct. I’m thankfully pain-free again, but also mindful that health is not a sure thing. It can change in a heartbeat.
Some of you have had this same experience in your relationships. Someone you believed in. Someone you counted on. Someone you just knew would ALWAYS be there for you. And then they weren’t. For some, it came because they simply chose to be with someone else. For others, it was death that took them away. It often makes people wary of getting too attached to people because they know that relationships are not as much of a sure thing as they thought. Truthfully, either through death or choice, no relationship lasts forever.
That’s why David’s words mean so much. There is only One God. There is only One who is a Solid Rock that you can count on, bank on, and stand on. God does not fluctuate like the housing market, or come and go like our health, or leave us like so many in our lives have. God is steadfast. God is dependable. God will never leave you or forsake you. In a world of unsteadiness and unpredictability, God is The Rock upon which you can build your life. He alone is our Sure Thing. That’s God’s Word for you today.
