“It’s All About Jesus!”
“The Woman at the Well”
Jesus replied, “Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews. But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” – John 4:21-24 (NLT)

“What Really Matters”
When I was reading our passage today, my mind went to Matt Redman’s classic song, “Heart of Worship.” In that song, he writes, “I’ll bring you more than a song, for a song in itself is not what you have required. You search much deeper within, through the way things appear; you’re looking into my heart.”
That’s the essence of what Jesus was getting at with the woman at the well. She tried to sidestep Jesus’ personal probe into her life with an argument about which mountain was the “proper” mountain to worship God on. Jesus quickly brought her back to the issue at hand. It doesn’t matter where you’re worshipping God, or how you’re worshipping Him, for that matter, if your heart is not where it needs to be. “Spirit and truth,” Jesus said, “are the key.” An open and honest heart. A hunger and thirst for God. Those are the things that matter to the Lord. The Lord is looking for those who are looking for HIM! As Matt Redmon’s song says, “It’s all about You, all about You, Jesus.” That’s the spirit Jesus is looking for.
Paul and Silas had an amazing encounter with God during a time of worship in a prison. I had a friend today who told me that he had an incredible moment with God not long ago as he sat in his shower. Probably the most amazing moment I’ve had with God was at the sink in my bathroom. Desperation. Brokenness. Surrender. Those are the ingredients that invite the presence of God to meet with us.
Here’s the point. Jesus will meet you WHEREVER you are. Sanctuary, sofa, or seaside. He doesn’t care what you’re wearing or how your hair’s fixed. It doesn’t matter to Him if there’s music or videos or absolute silence. He’s not there because of any of the props we think are so important to worship. He’s there because your heart is open and you’re ready to hear from Him. Spirit and truth. That’s what matters most. That’s God’s Word for you today.
