Walking Through the Psalms

“Overwhelmed by Grace”
“Overwhelmed by our sins.” Have you ever felt like that? I’ve talked with many people who have. Sometimes we are overwhelmed by our sins when we’ve done something that’s caused great pain or loss. Perhaps we were driving intoxicated and had an accident that cost someone their life. Maybe we got so caught up in an addiction that we lost our spouse, lost our kids, lost our job, or lost our home. Sin can have horrible consequences sometimes. Consequences that are almost unbearable. It can be overwhelming.
We can also be overwhelmed by our sins by doing things again that we swore we’d never do. You know the cycle. We confess, repent, and find forgiveness from God. We promise Him we’ll never do that again. But then here we are. We’re back on our faces before Him in shame, having done it again. The shame and sense of failure can be overwhelming in moments like that.
Sometimes it’s just the amount of sin we’ve accumulated over the years. I’ve prayed before with people who had been away from God for a LONG time. As they sit there realizing how many years of their lives they wasted that they can never get back, you can see it in their eyes. They’re overwhelmed.
But the great news that David points out in our verse is that, though our sin can overwhelm US, it can never overwhelm the grace of God. God’s grace is great enough to forgive us, even when our sins have dearly cost us or those we love. David experienced this one himself. God’s grace is great enough to forgive us when our sin has taken everything from us. In fact, God is willing to not only forgive, but He is also willing to help us REBUILD. Many of my friends in recovery have discovered that great truth. God’s grace is greater than all the years we spent away from God. The thief on the cross only had a few moments of life and breath left when he cried out to Jesus. But those few moments of grace covered a whole lifetime of sin. In fact, God’s grace can cover us even when we struggle to forgive ourselves.
Perhaps some of you can relate to this. Maybe there’s someone who needs to know today that even if your sin has broken your heart, trashed your life, and swallowed you in shame, God can still forgive. He hasn’t given up on you, and He offers you Light and Love and a brand-new start, regardless of how dark your past has been. Sin can be overwhelming. But don’t let it stop you from crying out to God because God’s Grace will always be greater. As the Apostle Paul put it, “Where sin did abound, grace did MUCH MORE abound” (Romans 5:20). Now THAT’S overwhelming! That’s God’s Word for you today.
