“It’s All About Jesus!”
Standing near the cross were Jesus’ mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, “Dear woman, here is your son.” And he said to this disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from then on this disciple took her into his home. – John 19:25-27 (NLT)

“Don’t Forget Your Mother”
Our passage today comes from one of the most important scenes in history. Jesus on the cross. He has completed His mission. He has fulfilled all that God the Father gave Him to do. He has poured Himself into the Twelve who will continue His work on Earth. He has proven through His perfect life and abundant miracles that He is who He claimed to be: the Son of God. Now He is about to offer His death as full payment for the sins of mankind, forever changing how people become right with God. But before He dies, He takes care of one last piece of business. He asks His disciple John to take care of His mother.
What an incredible and thoughtful thing Jesus did. I wonder what went through Jesus’ mind. I wonder if He looked at His mother weeping, and His mind went back to all she had gone through. I wonder if He thought about the visitation of the angel and how frightening that had to be for a young girl like Mary. I wonder if He thought about all she endured from her family and friends as a young woman pregnant before she should have been. I wonder if He thought about the weight of responsibility she carried as the mother of the Messiah and how she must have worried and fretted through the years. I wonder if he thought about her life as a single mom after Joseph died and how hard she had to work to take care of Him and His siblings. I wonder if He thought about how many times she encouraged Him, cared for Him, fed Him, and prayed for Him as He traveled, preached, and healed. I wonder if, in these last moments of His life, He thought about how much she loved Him. And I wonder if all these thoughts reminded Him again of how much He loved her and owed to her. So, Jesus took a moment before He saved the world to make sure that His mother would be cared for when He was gone.
Jesus thought it was important to remember His mother. Today might be a good day for us to do the same. To all you moms out there, thank you and we love you! Happy Mother’s Day! That’s God’s Word for you today.
