“Your Daily Bread”
In today’s verse, Jesus takes us back to the wilderness. It reminds us of the journey from Egypt to Canaan. As they wandered for those forty years, God provided bread for them each day called “manna.” But the bread God gave was only good for one day, except on the day before the Sabbath when it would be good for two days. Jesus uses this familiar reference to His Disciples to teach them a lesson about prayer.
He reminds them with this that God is a Provider. God took care of His People during their long, hard journey, and Jesus is reminding us that God will take care of us, too. He will provide for our needs. God showed up every morning for Moses and the people, and He will show up for us as well.
But this prayer also teaches us to trust. God didn’t give the Israelites a month’s worth of food or even a week’s worth of food. He gave them just what they needed for that day. That meant that every night when they went to bed, they trusted God to be there in the morning when they arose. And that was the point. God wanted the people to know that He is trustworthy. He will show up every single day with a fresh helping of Grace. He will show up every single day with a fresh expression of His Love. He will show up every single day with exactly what we need for that day. We can trust Him because He is trustworthy.
And here’s a beautiful thought. This prayer is an expression of how God wants to walk with us—Each day. Too many people get one helping of God on Sunday and try to make it a whole week on that. That’s why so many of us are spiritually malnourished and dehydrated. God wants us to meet with Him daily, talk with Him daily, depend on Him daily, and enjoy Him daily. Jesus, our Bread of Life, will give us all we need for this day as we fully embrace Him. But tomorrow is another day. Another set of problems. Another day of challenges and struggles that sap our strength and test our resolve. Today’s helping of Jesus isn’t enough. We will need His provision and power afresh and anew when tomorrow comes.
So come and seek God today for your “daily bread.” Ask Him to give you the “manna” you need for all that you will face. As He fills you up and provides for your day, thank Him for His never-ending faithfulness. Because tomorrow, when you awake, He will be waiting with exactly what you need for that day—your Daily Bread. That’s God’s Word for you today.
