I think the hardest part of going to a doctor is the waiting room. I can handle the probing, the blood-drawing, and even the breathtakingly cold stethoscopes that they keep in a freezer somewhere. I can handle the wooden ruler they stick down your throat when they look in your mouth. I don’t mind them hitting my knee with that tiny toddler’s hammer that they use. I don’t even mind getting shots. What I DO mind is WAITING. I don’t think I’m alone in this.
Take a look around any doctor’s waiting room and look at the faces. They’re nervous. They’re stressed. They’re worried. They’re frustrated. For some of them, this is no “just a check-up” visit. There’s something serious going on, and it has them on edge. For others, they’ve been here several times before, and they don’t seem to be any closer to knowing what’s wrong. For still others, they are here with a child, a spouse, or a parent, and their anxiety is about something they fear but cannot stop. Knowing would be better. Even if it were bad news, at least they would know. It’s the waiting and the not knowing that are most torturous.
It’s like that with God. David said in our verse today that he learned to “wait patiently for the Lord.” There are frustrating times when we’re still waiting for God to answer. There are those anxious moments when we’re asking God, “What’s this all about?” There are those nerve-wracking periods where it seems that God has forgotten that we’re still waiting out here for Him to call our name. Some of us have been in this waiting room for a LONG TIME. And we’re growing weary.
Let David’s words comfort you today. “And He turned to me and heard my cry.” God has not forgotten you. God has your name on His List and will get to you when it’s time. God knows that you prayed, knows what you need, and knows exactly how to take care of you when it’s time. This waiting is the hardest part. It won’t take nearly as much faith from you when God’s treating you. It won’t take nearly as much trust as He takes you through His process. What takes faith is waiting to see Him. What we often can’t see is that God is already at work. He’s already gathering all that He needs to tend to your every need. But you’ll have to wait for Him to call your name.
So pick up your Bible, read the promise He makes, and remind yourself of God’s love. Listen to some worship music that soothes your heart and soul. Share your heart with a close friend and ask them to pray with you. Don’t let your mind take you to dark and worrisome places. Trust God’s timing and trust Him. He has heard your cry for help. Your Great Physician will be with you shortly. That’s God’s Word for you today.
