John 14 – Assurance From Jesus

“Jesus Is Coming for You”

Today’s passage is one of those that confused the disciples. Even though He tried to explain to them that He was going to be leaving, they couldn’t wrap their minds around it. They certainly couldn’t understand that His betrayal, arrest, and death on a cross were a path to victory. They were hoping and looking for an earthly kingdom where they would be big shots. Jesus had something better and more eternal in mind. So one more time, He tried to assure them that though they may not see Him for a bit, He’d be back for them. My guess is that it didn’t make much sense to them until it happened. That’s when it all became clear.
Jesus is coming for you. Does that thought assure you or scare you? Sometimes, like the disciples, we hold onto the things of this world as if these are the things that are going to last forever. They are not. All this stuff that we work so hard to possess? It’ll all be ashes and dust. This life that we fight to preserve and hold onto as long as we can? It’s going to pass away, too. For all of medical science’s advancements, death still comes to us all. But that’s okay. Because when it does, Jesus will come for us.
People often ask me if I think these are the “last days” and if I believe Jesus is coming back soon. I tell them the answer to that is above my pay grade. The last days started when Jesus ascended to Heaven, and Jesus said only the Father knows when His Second Coming will be. But make no mistake, before you die or after, Jesus will come. You can count on that.
So rest in that today. Don’t let the trauma of this planet steal your joy. Jesus will one day return to set everything straight. Don’t worry about getting old, facing death, or what happens afterward. Even as you read this, Jesus is getting your place ready. It’ll be better than any home you’ve ever imagined. We don’t know all the particulars, but we do know it's a place without pain, sickness, death, or disease. No more sorrow, no more tears. God will wipe every tear of loss and struggle from our eyes. Face your day with courage and hope. Fight the good fight and serve the Lord faithfully. Smile when hardship comes, and rest in the most amazing promise ever. Jesus is coming for you. That’s God’s Word for you today.
