“A Bridge Over Troubled Water”
I grew up back when music was good. You know, back when groups like the Beatles, Chicago, and Steely Dan dominated the airways. One of my favorite groups during that time was Simon and Garfunkel. If you heard them, you’re familiar with their classic hit, “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” What a beautiful, encouraging song of love.
The words could easily have been spoken by Jesus. Do you remember them? “When you’re weary, feeling small, when tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all. I’m on your side when times get rough. And when friends just can’t be found, like a bridge over troubled water, I will lay me down.” That’s our Jesus. The One who sticks closer than a brother!
That’s what Jesus was trying to convey to His disciples in our passage today. Things had gotten increasingly difficult as Jesus’ ministry progressed. Now the religious leaders were looking for an opportunity to kill Him. And that opportunity would soon come. The disciples would soon become frightened, disillusioned, and discouraged as Jesus got arrested and taken to the cross. Their world would get turned upside down. So before those moments ever hit, Jesus speaks these incredible words of assurance. “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.” Jesus wanted them to know that no matter how bad things got, He was still God and He was still in charge. He would be the Light in their darkness. He would be their strength in their weakness. He would be their hope in the midst of their despair. He would see them through.
Those are His words to YOU today as well. No matter what you’re facing. No matter what you’re going through. No matter how tough the times are that you are in, Jesus will see you through. He won’t abandon you. He won’t leave you to fight alone. No matter how rough the waters look before you, He will get you across. So if you’re troubled today, hum a little Simon and Garfunkel and remember. You have a bridge over your troubled water too! That’s God’s Word for you today.
