“What Keeps Most of Us Sick”
“Do you want to get well?” I think this is one of the most penetrating questions that Jesus asked. It requires a lot more soul-searching than many of us are willing to do. It also makes us face the hard work that comes with what “getting well” means.
Let’s unpack that together. Let’s say we’ve found ourselves being less than we want to be as Christ-followers. We yield to temptation rather than overcome it. Our faith is weak, and we’re not really growing. When we’re asked, “Do you want to get well?”, how do we answer? To be “well” means to be healthy. And a healthy faith requires spending time with God, opening His Word, and seeking Him in prayer. Many people want God to just zap them into maturity, but that’s not how it works. Are you willing to commit to the disciplines that make you a disciple? That’s what it means to be well.
This same principle is true no matter what part of life you’re applying it to. Do you want your marriage to be well? Do you want your relationship with your kids to be well? Do you want your health, your attitudes, or your relationships to be well? If the answer is “Yes,” then you have to be willing to do something really, really hard. You have to be willing to CHANGE. If nothing ever changes, then nothing ever changes. Many people SAY they want to be well, but few are truly willing to pay the price of what is necessary for their lives to be different. We’re like the addict who tells us how desperately they want to “kick the habit.” But they don’t want to go to rehab, go to a recovery group, or go through withdrawal. They don’t really want to be well.
I challenge you to sit with Jesus today and let Him ask you that question. “Do you want to get well?” And as He reveals the areas of your life that need health and healing, ask yourself if you’re willing to do your part in your healing. Because it’s the unwillingness to change that keeps most of us sick. That’s God’s Word for you today.
