“Do You Know Who You’re Talking To?”

Years ago, in the early part of the last century, a man’s car broke down on the side of the road. He was out working on the car, unsuccessfully trying to get it started, when another man stopped to help. The second gentleman looked at the engine, worked on it for just a minute and told the first man to start it up. The car immediately started with no problem. The owner of the car asked his helper, "How did you fix the car so quickly, and how did you know what it needed?" The man answered, "I am Henry Ford. I built the car. I know what makes it work."
Don’t you just love Jesus’ words to the woman at the well in our passage today? “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to…” Those two understandings change everything. This was Jesus. God in the flesh. This was the One who made this woman and who knew everything about her. He was also the One who could fix her life, change her life, and bring her peace and fulfillment like she had never known. That was whom she was speaking to.
But take another look at the first part of that statement. “If you only knew the gift God has for you.” Jesus was there, not to condemn her or put her down, but to bless her with the gifts of God. The gift of forgiveness that could set her free from her guilt. The gift of grace that could break the chains of her shame. The gift of unconditional, unending love that would meet her deepest longing. She thought he was just another Jewish man who would look down his nose at her. She had no idea who she was talking to.
Do YOU? As you come before Jesus, do you know who YOU are talking to? You’re speaking to the Creator, Maker of heaven and earth. You’re speaking to the One with unlimited power and unlimited ability to heal, change, restore, and renew. He is the One who can provide, protect, and deliver. And He is the God of Good Gifts. Gifts of grace. Gifts of peace. Gifts of comfort. Gifts of joy. Don’t just sit and “say a prayer” as though you were talking to the wind. Remember who you’re talking to. This is Jesus. That’s God’s Word for you today.
