“Love Letter in the Sky”
About 10 years ago, a guy from Melbourne, Australia named Michael decided to seal the deal with his girlfriend Maree. They had dated for about eight years but had taken a “break” for a while. Having reconnected, he realized that she wasn’t as passionate about him as he was about her. He knew he desperately needed to show her just how in love with her he was. So he spent $4000 for a skywriting crew to put the words, “Maree Marry Me” and a heart in the sky. It looked spectacular. People all over Melbourne were snapping pictures and posting the images on social media. It was an amazing, heartfelt expression of love. People were waiting for pictures of the couple to be splashed all over the internet. But it never happened. In spite of his effort, in spite of his financial sacrifice, and in spite of him expressing his undying love for the whole world to see, Maree said, “No.” Sometimes love just isn’t enough.
Love was God’s motivation, too. It was love that caused Him to create us. It was love that kept Him coming after us, even as we ran hard the other way. It was love that made Him never stop chasing us across the annals of history. It was love that caused Him to rescue us, protect us, and work among us—even though we kept wanting to do life OUR way. And when the patriarchs weren’t enough, and the prophets weren’t enough, and the kings weren’t enough, and the great leaders of faith He raised up weren’t enough, He decided to write it in the sky. So, He sent His Only Son to give His life on the cross. Somehow, I think He hoped we’d finally get it. But many of us still didn’t, and many of us still don’t.
Let me say it again today on God’s behalf. God loves you. He loves you in spite of all you’ve done. He loves you in spite of how you’ve spent your life. He loves you even if you’ve told Him you want nothing to do with Him, and you want Him to just leave you alone. He can’t. He has loved you from the beginning, and He will love you till the end. He has spent all that He has to let you know how He feels about you. His love letter in the sky will always be there for you to respond to. Even if you say, “No.” That’s God’s Word for you today.
