“It’s All About Jesus!”
Jesus on Money, Possessions, and Security
“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. – Matthew 6:19 (NLT)

“When Treasures Become Trash”
In 1984, I bought my dream car. I spotted it on the showroom floor of a car dealership when I took a friend there so he could apply for a job. It was a black Camaro sports car with gold wheels and all the bells and whistles, including a top-of-the-line sound system. I had to have it. I have to admit that I loved strutting around in that car with the stereo blaring and turning heads. A fitting car for a guy whose highest intimacy need is for attention!
But my dream was short-lived. Before I had even made my first payment on the car, I was in an accident (not my fault). My beautiful black sports car was sent to the shop for 5 weeks for repairs. The night I got it back, I took it for a test drive and was hit again. And again, not my fault. Some months later, while we were in church on a Sunday night, there was a hailstorm (also not my fault). My poor baby was dinged from front to back. A few months after that, on a trip to Houston, Wanda fell asleep at the wheel. We slid off the road, flattened a sign, and ended up backwards down in a ditch. She claimed I was preaching while she was driving, so her falling asleep was my fault. Oh yeah, our insurance company canceled our policy.
Isn’t it funny how quickly things can change in this world? Dream cars can become beat-up pieces of junk in no time at all. Dream homes can turn into money pits. Dream vacations can disintegrate into nightmares before you know it. Stuff of this world doesn’t last, doesn’t fulfill, and doesn’t deliver what it promises. That’s why Jesus says that we just can’t trust it. We need to be careful about how much we invest ourselves in such things. And what we hope to get in return.
My Camaro made me feel “cool” for a while. But it was a selfish choice for me to make, and it didn’t make me a better man. In the end, it only left me frustrated, angry, and broke. It also taught me a valuable lesson. You can enjoy the things of this world, but you don’t want to “treasure” them. “Treasures” of this world can turn into trash quite quickly. Then they’ll cancel your insurance. Welcome to Earth. That’s God’s Word for you today.
