Relax. This verse doesn’t mean what you think it means. I say that because there are some of you who read that verse and thought it meant God is going to give you the stuff that you really, really want. Sorry to burst your bubble, but it kind of means the exact opposite of that. David points out in the opening verses of this Psalm that we shouldn’t be envious of people who seem to get ahead by evil means. We get jealous of the nice clothes, nice homes, and nice stuff that we don’t have. But none of that stuff lasts. It all rusts, rots, and falls apart. He suggests that we prosper in something more lasting. God.
Jesus picks up this same theme in Matthew 6 when He talks about not storing up treasures here on earth, but instead storing up treasures in Heaven. The issue that both David and Jesus are getting at is that you can have everything this world has to offer and still be empty and unsatisfied. No matter what you get or how much of it you have, it just won’t scratch the itch you’re trying to reach. Take a look at the number of “the rich and famous” who live such sad lives, are riddled with addictions, and become suicidal. They have everything they want. But none of it is the true “desire of their hearts.”
The point David is trying to make is profound and important. Are you ready? Don’t miss this. God IS your heart’s desire. You think you want that car, those clothes, and that house because it’ll make you happy. But what you’re really looking for is CONTENTMENT. Paul reminds us in Philippians 4 that we can have contentment in Christ even when we have next to nothing at all. You think you want that position or those accolades because it’ll make you feel important. But what your soul is really longing for is SIGNIFICANCE. Jesus takes ordinary people and makes them extraordinary. In Him, your life has eternal significance. You think that man or that woman is the desire of your heart. But they’re not. What you want, really want, is to be LOVED. Fully and unconditionally. As much as we want another person to love us like that, their best attempts fall short. Only God can love us as we need to be loved. The love of others is nice, but not quite enough.
So I’m sorry if I rained on your parade today, but God’s not going to give you everything you want. Instead, He’ll give you something BETTER. He’ll give you everything your heart is truly looking for. HIMSELF. He IS your heart’s desire. That’s God’s Word for you today.
