Walking Through the Psalms
“For I am poor and needy, and my heart is full of pain.” – Psalm 109:22 (NLT)
“The God of Our Broken Hearts”
“For I am poor and needy, and my heart is full of pain.” – Psalm 109:22 (NLT)
“The God of Our Broken Hearts”
When I read this part of David’s prayer in Psalm 109, my mind flashed back to Genesis. Adam and Eve sinned, and God’s beautiful world that He made began to quickly become dark and ugly. Adam and Eve were driven from the Garden. Cain killed Abel. And as mankind began to multiply, the evil multiplied with it. Rather than embracing and enjoying the company of their Creator, people began to run further and further away from God. Then one day, as God looked down upon the earth, we find this sad description: “He saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil… It broke his heart.” (Gen 6:5-6 NLT)
Take a look at those last four words again. “It broke his heart.” My flashback to that verse reminded me that God “gets it.” God knows what it’s like to have a heart full of pain. David wasn’t crying out to some unfeeling Deity who had no idea what he was going through. He was praying to a Father who knew the ache of a broken heart all too well. That kind of God knows how to respond.
Maybe YOU can identify with David today. Is your heart full of pain? Maybe you’ve been through a rejection that has left you feeling worthless and abandoned. Maybe you’ve been working hard to fulfill a dream that just came crashing down around you. Maybe you’re struggling with a loss that has left a gaping hole in your soul. Maybe your heart is breaking from watching a spouse or parent struggle day to day with an illness that is slowly claiming their life. Or maybe, like God, your broken heart is for someone you love who is running hard towards dark places, wrong crowds, and horrible decisions.
If this is you, cry out to Him. Be free to let the tears run down your face as you open your broken heart before Him. Jesus wept over Jerusalem. God wept over His fallen planet. He gets it. He understands. He knows what it’s like to have your heart ripped from your chest. Let Him put His arms around you and hold you close. Put the full weight of all that you are carrying today upon Him. Let your Father grieve with you. Let Him comfort you. Let Him lay His gentle hand upon your shoulder and remind you that you are not facing this hurt all by yourself. Let His presence give you peace and strength in the midst of your pain. Let Him lay His healing hand upon your soul. God knows what it’s like to experience a broken heart. He’s more than able to help you today with yours. He’s the God of our broken hearts. That’s God’s Word for you today.
