Walking Through the Psalms
“As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him?” – Psalm 42:1-2 (NLT)
“I Miss You”
“As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him?” – Psalm 42:1-2 (NLT)
“I Miss You”
My wife said something to me not long ago that caught me a bit off guard. One evening, after we were both finally home, she said, “I miss you.” On the surface, that seems like a funny thing to say. I mean, we live in the same house. We sleep in the same bed. I rarely travel without her anymore, so it’s not like we’re experiencing times of separation. So why was she saying that?
The truth is that even though we’ve been in proximity to each other, we haven’t had a lot of time to just BE with each other. Time to connect. Time to talk. Time to catch up on each other’s worlds. We just live really busy lives. We both still work full-time. We have our grandkids a lot. There always seem to be activities and events to attend. In the blur of all that’s been going on, there just hasn’t been a lot of time for just US. Have you ever been in that mode?
It’s easy to get into that mode with God as well, isn’t it? Take another look at the words of our psalmist for today. “As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him?” Have you ever felt like that? I sure have. Life can take over if you let it. There are a million things that need to get done, and an endless stream of people all clamoring for a moment of your time. It’s easy to get so caught up in the busyness of life that we get away from that “US” time that we need with our Heavenly Father. Time to sit in His Presence. Time to rest in His Peace. Time to empty our hearts of all our burdens, frustrations, and fears. Time to allow Him to speak words of hope and encouragement to us. Time for Him to breathe a fresh new breath of life into us. Time to be wrapped in His Love. Time that allows Him to quench the thirst of our souls.
Wanda and I are finding we have to MAKE “us” time. There will always be things to fill the space if we don’t carve it out intentionally. So we’re trying to be more thoughtful about planning it. It’s the same with God. Time with our Father won’t happen unless we determine it will happen. So make that decision today. Get up a little earlier. Set aside something that can wait to make room for the One you desperately need. Become thoughtful, intentional, and diligent about your “US” time with God. Don’t wait until you’re dying of thirst for Him. If you listen, you might even hear Him say, “I miss you.” That’s God’s Word for you today.
