Powerful Words from the Prophets
I said, ‘Plant the good seeds of righteousness, and you will harvest a crop of love. Plow up the hard ground of your hearts, for now is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and shower righteousness upon you.’ – Hosea 10:12 (NLT)
“Sow What You Want to Reap”
I said, ‘Plant the good seeds of righteousness, and you will harvest a crop of love. Plow up the hard ground of your hearts, for now is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and shower righteousness upon you.’ – Hosea 10:12 (NLT)
“Sow What You Want to Reap”
“You reap what you sow.” Remember that old proverb? It’s so true. It’s stated repeatedly in Hosea. It’s the principle that reminds us that we get back what we put in. God tries to point out to His People through Hosea that their evil deeds and their sin will only bring death and destruction back upon them. They are the only ones who can change the path they’re on.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. Look at the first part of our passage today: “Plant the good seeds of righteousness, and you will harvest a crop of love.” In other words, walk in the path of God and do godly deeds, and you will receive the good life and love that you want. You can’t treat God and others with contempt and expect to receive blessing and love in return. It doesn’t work that way. At one point, the Lord points out that if you throw the seeds of your life carelessly to the wind, you will reap the whirlwind. That is, chaos and disaster.
This is a great lesson for us to ponder. Think of it this way. What is it that you really hope to get out of your marriage? Love? Respect? Commitment? Then we need to ask: are we planting seeds that bring about that kind of return? Are we sowing love, kindness, respect, and commitment into the relationship? If not, it’s unlikely that we’re going to harvest any.
The same is true for our kids. What kind of adults do we hope our children will be? Are we sowing into their lives the kind of character traits that we want to see one day? Are we sowing the seeds of the knowledge of God and His Word that will be planted in their hearts and help grow them into men and women of God?
How about in our relationship with God? What are we sowing? We don’t just wake up one day as mature men and women of God full of His Spirit and strong in the faith. That grows out of reading His Word, seeking His Heart, and living out what God shares with us. Withered, weak lives of faith are not a result of any lack of effort on God’s part. It’s because we haven’t invested in the things that bring life, strength, and growth. Where we will be a year from now in our walk with God is totally dependent upon the seeds we’re planting in our relationship with Him TODAY. Tell me what you’re putting into it, and I’ll tell you what you’ll get out of it. Look in the mirror and say this out loud: “I’ll reap what I sow.” Now go sow wisely. That’s God’s Word for you today.
