One night, several years ago, I came home late from work and was really hungry. After scrounging around in the refrigerator and not finding anything that I wanted, I finally told Wanda, “What I really want is a pizza. A pepperoni and mushroom pizza!” She smiled and said, “There’s some frozen pizza in the freezer.” I opened the freezer unenthusiastically and just stared at the box.
The doorbell rang, so I closed the freezer door to answer it. When I opened it, there stood a young man wearing a Pizza Hut hat with a large pizza box in his hands. I said, “Can I help you?” He said, “Yeah, I’ve got your pizza order.” I said, “I’m sorry, I never ordered a pizza.” His shoulders dropped. “Are you sure you have the right address?” I asked. He looked at the order and read off our address. I shook my head. “That’s our address, but we didn’t order a pizza.” He nodded and said, “It happens. Sometimes people write down the wrong street or address, and sometimes kids call in fake orders. No worries.” Then he smiled and said, “Would you like a pizza?” “What kind?” I asked. He looked at the order and said, “Pepperoni and mushroom.” My eyes got big with excitement. “Sure!” I said. He handed me the box and said, “We can’t sell it now, so it’s all yours!” I looked down at his name tag as he turned to leave. It said, “Michael.” I swear I could almost hear the angels singing.
Have you ever been visited by an angel? I’ll bet you have. It’s just that most of the time, like my pizza guy, they don’t look like angels. The word “angel” means “messenger.” And God sends us messengers all the time. Maybe you’ve had a messenger of encouragement who just happened to call you when you really needed someone to pick you up. Or maybe you had an angel show up just when you needed an extra hand or help. Maybe you had an angel text you and let you know that they were thinking about you at a time when you didn’t think anyone cared. Maybe your angel brought you some food or gave you some money. Maybe your angel offered you a place to stay. Or maybe your angel gave you a hug at a time when you really needed a hug, and they reminded you that you are loved and never alone.
Sometimes our angels look a lot like friends, family, and people at church, but they are angels just the same. God sends them as His messengers just like He did for Daniel. Why? “For you are very precious to God.” God put you in your angel’s mind. God laid you on your angel’s heart. God nudged your angel to contact you, help you, or encourage you…all because you are PRECIOUS to Him. He even knows what kind of pizza you like! That’s God’s Word to you today.
