Powerful Words from the Prophets
“I will brighten the darkness before them and smooth out the road ahead of them. Yes, I will indeed do these things; I will not forsake them.” – Isaiah 42:16(b)

“Dark Places And Rough Roads”
Dark places and rough roads. Does that sound like where YOU are at today? As I read this passage from Isaiah, I thought about all the conversations I’ve had this past week with different people. One person who had recently lost their baby before it was even born. Another person who is learning how to navigate life without their spouse, who had died. An individual who is facing a major financial crisis. Still another who is trying to cope with chronic pain without any answers so far from the doctor. Another conversation was with a person whose company seems to be in complete chaos. They were all different people with different needs and problems. But the common denominator was that all of them were facing situations that seemed like dark places and rough roads. Maybe that’s the common denominator for us all.
But we have another common denominator as well. A promise from God. Through Isaiah, the Lord promises that we don’t have to face these overwhelming circumstances all by ourselves. Let’s reread our verse for today. “I will brighten the darkness before them and smooth out the road ahead of them. Yes, I will indeed do these things; I will not forsake them.” Look at what the Lord says about these difficult roads we’re on. “I will brighten the darkness before them.” He didn’t promise that the darkness would just “go away,” but He did promise that He would brighten that darkness to show the way forward.
Look at that next promise: “I will smooth out the road ahead of them.” He doesn’t say that we won’t have to walk that difficult road or that He will make it even shorter. He says He’ll make it “smoother.” That means He won’t let us stumble and fall. He’ll steady our steps and give us strength for the journey.
The last promise is the best of all. “I will not forsake them.” What a powerful reminder. In fact, I want you to take a moment to say these words out loud: “I am not alone.” When you’re in those difficult times, it can seem like you’re all by yourself. But you’re not. God is right there with you. Every step along the way. Our Father is the Light before us, the steadying Hand upon us, and the Presence that walks beside us. Wherever you go this week, He is there. Especially in those dark places and on those rough roads. That’s God’s Word for you today.
