Several years ago, I preached a message called “Freedom in Slavery.” I used the text from Romans 6 about how Paul says that we only find true freedom when we become slaves of God. I know that sounds funny, but it’s true. When God becomes the Lord or the Director of our lives, we’re freed from GUILT. No matter who we are, what we’ve done, or how bad we were, God wipes the slate clean by His Amazing Grace! We’re also freed from LONELINESS. Many of us have had person after person walk out of our lives. But God is here to stay. We have a Forever Friend and never have to be alone again!
Making God our Master also sets us free from living lives devoid of PURPOSE. From the moment we commit our lives to Him, we become His Ambassadors wherever we go. Our schools, our jobs, and our communities become our mission fields. God works through us to accomplish His good work. We are also freed from being DEFINED BY OTHERS. Other people may have an opinion of us, but they no longer get to determine our value and worth. The only one who gets to define us is the God who made us! And finally, we’re freed from DEATH. Christ rose from the dead, declaring freedom for us even from the grave. HIS resurrection is OUR resurrection! We, too, get to live forever with Him.
Are you free? REALLY free? Freedom doesn’t come from doing what you want, when you want, and where you want. Freedom doesn’t come from not having any rules, structure, or authority in your life. Those things may FEEL like freedom, but they’re not. You simply become a slave to your desires, a slave to your addictions, and a slave to the Enemy. All of which leads to self-destruction.
Freedom isn’t found by trying to make your way through life all on your own. Freedom is found by binding yourself to a God who will lead you into the life and destiny you were created to have. Heed the words of the psalmist today. Keep your eyes fixed on the Master who is ever so much more committed to you than you are to Him. God has bound Himself to you for all Eternity. Keep yourself bound to Him. That’s God’s Word for you today.
