Walking Through the Psalms

“Learning to Discern”
I’m a big believer in listening to intuition. It’s a tough concept to teach, but it is an important concept to learn. I can’t tell you how many times along the way I’m about to make a decision, and something starts stirring inside me that this is not a good decision to make. Almost without exception, when I’ve listened to that intuition, I’ve looked back later and been so glad I did. Likewise, when I’ve not listened to it, I’ve often lived to regret it. I’ve learned that what we frequently call “intuition” is actually the voice of God. It’s discernment. It’s a voice that gives us direction when the direction is not clear. It’s a voice that helps us to “sense” what’s right or best when “facts” may tell us differently. It’s a nod of the SPIRIT, not one of the mind. Discernment is a gift from God. Maybe one that you could use right now.
There are a few things I’ve discovered about discernment that I want to pass along. First, there are some people who have a stronger gift of discernment than others. LISTEN to these people. I’m not going to tell you that they are right 100% of the time, but they are right often enough to earn a fair hearing. Second, discernment for the rest of us is something that we can seek. The prayer of the psalmist is one we all should pray. It’s a prayer that God not only helps us to understand what He’s saying in the Scriptures but also asks Him what He is trying to say specifically to US! It’s a prayer that acknowledges that there is information that God knows that we don’t, and we’re seeking His help. That’s why James says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God…” What’s crazy is how often we DON’T! Third, and this is MOST important, you have to WANT to hear what the wisdom of discernment tells you. If we’re honest, sometimes we’re not really seeking discernment. We’re seeking affirmation for what we want to do. Even God has a hard time changing a mind that is already made up.
So where could YOU use discernment today? What decisions are you making that are decisions that you really need to get right? Are you listening to your HEART as well as your mind? Have you sought out some discerning people to help speak into your decisions? Have you asked God to help you discern beyond the surface? Have you asked Him to help you think with His mind, see with His eyes, and hear with His ears? Have you yielded your preconceived ideas to Him and let Him know you are surrendered to His direction? Follow these steps, and you’ll discover that a little discernment on the front end can save you a boatload of heartache on the back end. That’s God’s Word for you today.
