Walking Through the Psalms

“Standing On The Promises”
A few years ago, I was praying with a woman who was not long for this world. As I prayed, I found myself quoting God’s promises. It’s not that I needed to tell God what He said in the Bible. After all, He wrote it. I was quoting the promises because they were a comfort to me. Hopefully, they were a comfort to her as well. God’s promises are like that. They are like rails that we can hang onto when we find ourselves feeling a bit shaky or unsteady. They are the certainties that we know when we’re in a time of great uncertainty. They are like the warm blanket you snuggle beneath when it’s getting really cold outside. Quoting the promises of God doesn’t change the circumstances around us. But they can change our perspective. They can give our minds something to focus on other than the fearful situation we’re in. They can also keep us from staring into the abyss of the unknown future. The promises of God breathe hope into our hearts and peace into our souls. Could you use some of those promises today? Let me give you a few.
“Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9). “I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.” (Psalm 40:1-2). “The LORD gives his people strength. The LORD blesses them with peace.” (Psalm 29:11). “The LORD hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person faces many troubles, but the LORD comes to the rescue each time.” (Psalm 34:17-19). “Even when walking through the dark valley of death, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me, guarding, guiding all the way.” (Psalm 23:4). “See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1).
I don’t know what you’re going through today, but God does. Though you may not be able to change your circumstances, you can find hope and courage. Grab hold of one of those promises today and make it YOURS. Commit it to memory and repeat it throughout the day. God’s promises can steady you, comfort you, and strengthen you. You can stand strong, no matter what comes your way. Like the old hymn says, “Standing on the promises that cannot fail, when the howling storms of doubt and fear assail. By the living Word of God, I shall prevail. Standing on the promises of God!” That’s God’s Word for you today.
