Walking Through the Psalms
“Open my eyes to see wonderful things in your Word.” – Psalm 119:18 (TLB)
“Open my eyes to see wonderful things in your Word.” – Psalm 119:18 (TLB)
Do you believe God speaks to you? I do. In fact, I believe God speaks to each one of us every single day of our lives. There are a few different ways that God does that. Sometimes He speaks to us through His Spirit. Those are the quiet whispers in our souls. They are the “nudges” we feel to call or text someone, though sometimes we don’t even know why. There are times when God speaks to us through other people. I’ll bet you’ve heard Him that way. You’re having a conversation with someone, and they say something that rings with such truth that you know it’s right. Or sometimes someone gives a word of comfort or understanding, and you know you just got a hug from God.
But the most direct way that God speaks to us is through His Word. God spoke through many different authors over the course of centuries, giving them words that would still have power and meaning thousands of years later. That’s why you and I still today can pick up a Bible, read something, and feel as if it was written just for us for this moment in time. That’s the power of God to bring His Word to our lives. That’s why I love this verse from Psalm 119 so much. It’s a prayer asking God to help us make the most out of our time in His Word. Can I offer a couple of tips to help make that happen?
The first tip I would suggest is to “savor the Word.” By that, I mean to read smaller sections of scripture and spend some time actually thinking about what it’s saying. Think sipping, not gulping. Trying to read large amounts of scripture to simply “get through it” misses the point altogether. Read only a chapter, or only a section of verses, or even just one verse. But spend some time thinking about what it says. When you do that, you’ll be amazed at how often God will make just one word or one phrase stick with you. And it’ll be JUST what you need! When you find something that really hits you, say it out loud. I know it sounds funny, but there is power that comes from speaking the Word. Saying it will help you FEEL it. Saying it will help you BELIEVE it. Saying it will also help you REMEMBER it.
Finally, and this is really important, you have to truly WANT God to speak to you. Did you catch the first part of our verse today? “Open my eyes.” That’s saying, “Help me to WANT to see what you have to say!” Sometimes, God says things that encourage us. Sometimes, He says things that challenge us. Still other times, He says things that hurt a bit. But at ALL TIMES God is trying to HELP us. He’s trying to give us what we need in that moment to comfort us, or inspire us, and to shape us into the very best versions of ourselves that we can be. “Open my eyes,” is saying, “Give it to me, Lord. The good, the bad, and the ugly. I want it ALL!” Can you be that honest and open with God? I believe God wants to speak to each of us every single day of our lives. But I also believe we have to WANT to hear Him. Open your eyes, and you might discover God has some wonderful things to say to YOU! That’s God’s Word for you today.
