Walking Through the Psalms
“It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in people.” – Psalm 118:8 (NLT)
“Love People. Trust God!”
“It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in people.” – Psalm 118:8 (NLT)
“Love People. Trust God!”
“I just want a man I can always depend on.” “I just want a woman who will meet all my needs.” “I just want a friend who won’t let me down.” Ever heard these kinds of statements? Ever make one like it yourself? On the surface, it doesn’t seem like we’re asking for all that much. But the truth is, we are. What we’re looking for is not a person. It’s God. It’s not that there aren’t fairly dependable men. There are. The problem is, there are times when even the best of men will drop the ball on you. It’s not that there aren’t women out there who can be a good fit for you. There are. It’s just that no woman will meet all your needs, all the time, in every way. She doesn’t exist. And it’s not that there aren’t friends who are “there for you.” There are. They just don’t LIVE for you. There will be times when you want to count on them, and you can’t. Or times when you DO count on them, and they don’t come through.
You see, there are good men, good women, and good friends out there. There just aren’t any PERFECT ones. All of them, even the BEST of them, will not always be what you want them to be. That’s why even the most fairy-tale relationships have their tough chapters, difficult moments, and unsettling disappointments. You can have GOOD relationships with people. You just won’t have any totally free from pain and letdowns.
The reason this is so important is that I’ve watched people go from man to man, woman to woman, friend to friend, church to church, and place to place, looking for what they can’t possibly find. People will be people no matter where you find them. The moment you expect your spouse, friend, or pastor to be “like God,” you are setting yourself up for a huge disappointment. Because sooner or later, they will prove to you that they are not.
You can depend on God. He will always be there, no matter what. God will meet the deepest needs of your life, including the ones no human can begin to meet. The only time God will let you down is if you try to make Him into your personal genie rather than your Sovereign Lord. Please hear my heart. People are a WONDERFUL addition to life. Good men, good women, and good friends are a tremendous blessing. But always remind yourself that they are only human. Just like YOU. You can’t expect humans to be for you what God was meant to be. He’s your Refuge. And He IS Perfect. That’s God’s Word for you today.
