Walking Through the Psalms

“With God’s Help”
I want to give you some FANTASTIC news: Whatever it is that you are facing this week, you can overcome it! It doesn’t matter what it is. Look at the statement that David makes here. “We will do mighty things.” And David should know! This is the guy who took down the warrior Goliath. This is the guy who led Israel into battle after battle and emerged victorious. This is the guy who went from being a Shepherd Boy to a King. If there was ever a real-life, Cinderella story, David’s was it. If he were alive today, he’d make a great motivational speaker, traveling around trying to convince people that they, too, could go from rags to riches, weakling to warrior, and from nobody to somebody.
But the punch line in David’s “you can do it” pitch wouldn’t be the power of positive thinking. It would be the power of Divine Assistance. David was under no illusion as to the secret to his success. Notice the key phrases in this passage: “with God’s help” and “He will trample down our foes.” David was not being cocky in declaring his anticipated victories. He was divinely confident. He knew it was God who slew Goliath, not him. He knew it was God who anointed him king, and not just a position he worked hard to achieve. He had very little confidence in what he could do alone. But he was supremely confident in what God could do through him.
I hope you take that same posture this week. It’s disturbing to me when we under-believe what God can do through us. With God’s help, you can overcome any battle you’re facing. With God leading the charge, there’s nothing that you can’t do. The task before you may seem Goliath-like, but God can make you more than able to do what needs to be done. So, shake off the fear, and stand up in faith to do what you need to do. But don’t forget the secret to your success: “with God’s help.” Seek God BEFORE you face the giant! Seek God’s wisdom. Seek God’s strategy. Seek God’s guidance. Most of all, seek God’s HEART. Sometimes it’s not about God making you stronger to win. Sometimes it’s about God making you wiser. You really can have victory this week over whatever it is you’re facing. Just make sure you’re facing your giant the way David did. “With God’s help.” That’s God’s Word for you today.
