Walking Through the Psalms

“A Call for Help”
There was a sad and bizarre story in the news a few years ago about a woman who decided to go shopping…with SEVEN kids! That seems insane in and of itself. But rather than take them with her into the store, she left all seven in the car. They were ages 2-4! Two of the kids belonged to her, but the other five were children she was babysitting. Not only did she leave them alone, but she left them in a car with the doors locked and the windows rolled up on an extremely hot day. Thankfully, someone was wise enough to call 911, and the local sheriff’s department was able to come and get the kids out before they became overcome by the heat. Who was the hero who called for help? It was a four-year-old who was in the car! Sometimes the kids are smarter than the people caring for them.
As I read this story, I was thankful for one thing that we often take for granted. I was grateful for how easy it was to call for help. You just dial 911. If that child had to come up with a complete number for the police department or had called and been transferred to several departments, this story might have had a tragic ending. But this four-year-old knew that all he had to do was dial 911. And it saved his life and the lives of six other children.
The psalmist reminds us that it’s that easy for us to call for help from God, too. We don’t have to form long, flowery prayers to reach God. We don’t have to jump through hoops, perform elaborate rituals, or find the right person who has “connections” with God. All we have to do is simply pray, “Save us, O LORD our God!” Those words are a direct line to God’s heart. He is on duty 24/7 to respond to that prayer. It might be a medical emergency. It might be a relational emergency. It might be a financial crisis, parenting crisis, or spiritual crisis. God is standing by with all the power and authority to meet any and all needs. All we have to do is cry out to Him. You don’t even have to know God all that well because He already knows you intimately. You don’t have to explain to God where you are because He knows your location before you even call. You don’t even have to worry about how much it’s going to cost because His Grace has already paid the bill. All you have to be is wise enough and humble enough to pray the prayer, “Save us, O LORD our God!” God has made helping you so easy, even a four-year-old can do it. That’s God’s Word for you today.
