Walking Through the Psalms
“But Moses, his chosen one, stepped between the LORD and the people.” – Psalm 106:23 (NLT)
“Step Between”

“Step Between”
On June 5, 1989, in Tiananmen Square in China, one lone young man, carrying two shopping bags, stopped a line of a dozen tanks. It was the day after many student demonstrators had been killed. Tensions were high, and fear was in the air. But as the tanks rolled down the street, the young man, whose identity we don’t even know, stepped between the tanks and the people and brought them to a halt. The scene was caught on video for all the world to see. It was an incredible reminder of the difference one person can make. One person’s vote can determine an outcome. One person’s contribution can make a “dream project” a reality. One man’s courage can stop an advancing army. And one person’s prayer can move the heart of God.
That’s what our passage today is all about. The people of God were on a path heading towards destruction. They had disobeyed God again and again and had thrown His Grace back in His face. Enough was enough, and God was about to enact His judgment. “But Moses . . . stepped between God and the people.” Let the power of that statement knock you back a step or two. The punishment of a MULTITUDE of people was stopped by the intervening prayer of ONE concerned leader. Moses prayed, and God honored his prayer. The rolling tanks of God’s judgment stopped in their tracks because Moses fell to his knees and pleaded with God on the people’s behalf.
Let’s you and I do that today. Let’s “step between” God and someone we know who’s on a path of destruction. Yes, maybe, like the Israelites, it’s someone who has messed up time and time again. Yes, maybe they’ve been given chance after chance, and they really don’t deserve even another spoonful of God’s grace. But who of us has EVER deserved a spoonful of God’s grace? Maybe, before we throw in the towel on them and let them suffer the full consequences of the road they’re on, we could hit our knees on their behalf just one more time. Who knows, maybe our one simple prayer is just what it takes for the Spirit of God to break their heart, change their mind, and allow Christ to save their soul. It won’t hurt to try, will it? My guess is that some of US are here today because someone “stepped between” God and us somewhere in our past. Maybe today we can “pray it forward” for someone else. Let’s “step between” That’s God’s Word for you today.
