Walking Through the Psalms
“You spread out our sins before you—our secret sins—and you see them all.” – Psalm 90:8 (NLT)

“Your Secrets Aren’t Really Secrets”
There was a hysterical story in the news a few years ago. A man arrived in Barcelona, Spain, on a flight from Bogota, Colombia. As the man made his way through customs, he caught the attention of the police. He was acting nervous and anxious, which always makes the authorities a bit suspicious. But there was something else about him that wasn’t quite right. He was wearing a toupee. A bad toupee. A bad toupee that had a huge bulge under it. The police pulled him out of line and began to question him. They asked him to remove his toupee. When he did, they discovered a plastic bag containing 503 grams of cocaine! He didn’t get to see the beautiful sights of Barcelona, but he did get a chance to see how nice their jail cells are! :-)) So much for being sneaky.
“You’re as sick as your secrets.” That’s a great quote for all of us who have “stuff” we’re trying to hide. The big idea is that you have to bring your secrets into God’s Light if you really want to find healing and wholeness. If not, you’ll stay messed up all your life.
I’ve got another quote for you. And this one may startle you. “Your secrets aren’t really secrets.” You may think they are, but they’re not. You may not have ever told anyone your secret. You may think no one saw what you did. You may think there’s no way anyone could possibly know about your secret. But you’d be wrong. The psalmist reminds us that though we may be able to hide our “stuff” from people, we can never hide it from God. God was there. He saw. He heard. He knows. Our deepest, darkest secrets are laid out before Him as obvious as a dumb crook in a bad rug.
But unlike the police, God doesn’t want you to expose your secret to Him so He can throw you in jail. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. God wants you to confess your secret to Him so He can set you free! God knows you’re already in prison. You’re a prisoner of your secret fears. You’re a prisoner of your secret pain. You’re a prisoner of the Enemy by hiding your secret sin. God’s desire is not to “throw the book at you.” It’s to open His Heart to you. He wants to set you free from your fears, bring healing to your pain, and cast all your sin into His Sea of Forgiveness.
The choice is yours. You can stay sick and hide your secrets if you want to, but truthfully, the only one you’re hiding from is yourself. Your secrets aren’t really secrets. They are only ugly bumps we try to hide under our wigs of shame. It’s time to lose the toupee. It’s time to lose the pain, lose the fear, and lose the guilt. It’s time to walk out of your self-made prison and into the arms of God’s Freedom. No more secrets. And no more ridiculous hairpieces. That’s God’s Word for you today.
