Walking Through the Psalms

“Remember Who the Real Hero Is”
There is a prayer that I pray every week before our Sunday services. It is a prayer of confession. I confess every week before God that if anything at all of significance is going to happen, it will have to happen because of Him. I’m pretty good with people. I’m a decent communicator and not bad at telling stories. I try to speak from the heart and connect with people where they are. But what I can’t do is change people.
I can’t open people’s eyes and make them see the truth. I can’t repair their broken hearts. I can’t break the chains of their addictions. I can’t save their souls, restore their marriages, or breathe hope into them. I can’t quiet the torment of their anxiousness. I can’t lift the cloud of their depression or bring healing comfort to their grief. If any of that kind of stuff is going to happen, it’s going to have to be God, not me. He is the True Source of healing. He is the One Source of salvation. If something wonderful is going on, it’s His Strength at work, not mine. God just lets me come along for the ride. So, I remind myself of that every week. I let God know I’m under no illusion as to who the real Hero is. I’m just thrilled He lets me be a part of it all.
That’s the reminder in our verse today. “With my powerful arm, I will make him strong.” God’s promise to David, and to all of us, is not that He will make us great, but that He will do great things through us! And when you think of it that way, it takes all the pressure off. It means I don’t have to be a person of fantastic ability or uncanny talent. I don’t have to be super smart or have a magnetic personality. God is The One at work.
David’s story is OUR story. We’re all just simple shepherd boys whom God has invited into His Kingdom work. No matter what our role, position, or title, one thing is certain: The battle belongs to the Lord! You can face whatever it is that you’re up against today. You can be bold and faithful in whatever it is that you’re called to do today. You can look any enemy or any task right in the eye and know that you have this because GOD’S GOT YOU! Just keep your heart humble and keep your eyes upon Him. He will be your strength. He will do His work through you. His Strong Arm will do all the heavy lifting. So, enjoy the ride. Just never forget who the real Hero is. That’s God’s Word for you today.
