Walking Through the Psalms
“The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours; everything in the world is yours—you created it all.” – Psalm 89:11 (NLT)
“It’s God’s”
“The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours; everything in the world is yours—you created it all.” – Psalm 89:11 (NLT)
“It’s God’s”
“It’s God’s.” Say that out loud. It’s a truth that will help you more than you can imagine. Say it again. “It’s God’s.” Isn’t that freeing? We take so much responsibility for things outside of our control, and all we do is make ourselves neurotic. Besides, it’s not ours. It’s His. “Possession is nine-tenths of the law.” Every heard that expression? It basically means that if you have something in your possession, it is assumed that it’s yours, unless someone can prove otherwise. Let me give you another quote. “Possession is nine-tenths of the stress.” I’ve discovered that whenever I try to treat things as “mine,” rather than God’s, all I do is elevate my anxiety by trying to control much of what I can’t really control.
I remember walking and praying in the sanctuary some time ago. There was a situation we were dealing with in the church that I was really concerned about. As I was asking for God’s intervention and help, I remembered something remarkable and life-giving: IT’S NOT MY CHURCH! IT’S HIS! Now that may not sound very profound to you, but it was incredibly freeing for me. It allowed me to commit to God that I would do whatever He might ask me to do, but I surrendered the problem to Him. And you know what? God moved in the situation, and it was taken care of. It reminded me that often, when I claim ownership over things that aren’t mine, all I do is mess it up or pace the floor with needless anxiety. Reminding myself, “It’s God’s,” puts things back into a proper perspective.
Take another look at the psalmist’s words today. “The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours; everything in the world is yours.” How much could you reduce the stress and anxiety in your life if you took these words to heart? What situations have you been trying to control that you need to take your hands off of? What people have you been trying to control that you need to let go of? What circumstances are you allowing to consume you that you have no power over? How much better would your life be if you gave back to God what is rightfully His? It’s His World. It's His People. It’s His Church. Giving God possession is nine-tenths of the Peace.
So take a deep breath, hold out your hands, and picture yourself giving all those things you’ve been trying to own back to Him. And say those words one more time. “It’s God’s.” That’s God’s Word for you today.
