God’s love stands firm. I’ve got a feeling someone needs to hear that today. You’ve been jilted. You’ve been left. You’ve been lied to. You’ve had one promise after another broken. You’ve had one person too many look you in the eye and tell you that they’d always be there for you, only to be nowhere to be found when you really needed them. The word “love” flows so easily off people’s lips sometimes. But the love they’re often talking about is shallow and flimsy. It’s fair-weather and fickle. It’s here today and gone tomorrow. Some of us had parents whose love was conditional based on our performance or living up to their expectations. And we couldn’t. Some of us have had spouses whose love was supposed to be “till death do us part.” And it wasn’t. Some of us have had friends who said they were our “BFF.” Then tough times hit, and they became “MIA.”
Contrast that kind of love to the love the psalmist is talking about. “Your love stands firm.” God’s love STAYS. His love is not shaky. It is FIRM. It is SECURE. It is UNMOVEABLE. God’s love is not conditional or based upon your performance. When you are at your best, He loves you. When you are at your worst, He loves you. He loves you when you return His love with all the passion that you have inside you. But He also loves you when you run away from Him as hard as you can. He doesn’t just love you “till death.” In the words of that famous theologian, Buzz Lightyear, God loves you “to infinity and beyond.” He’s better than a BFF. Proverbs says He “sticks closer than a brother.” God’s love stands firm forever.
Maybe YOU need to hear that today. Maybe you’ve been on the receiving end of one too many broken promises and just need to know that there is someone who keeps their word. Or maybe you’re exhausted from trying to live up to the expectations of everyone around you and you just need to know there is someone who loves you just as you are. Or maybe you’ve been down a dark path…a path that took you to places you didn’t want to go and made you become someone you’re ashamed you became. And today you need to know that there is someone who loves you despite all that. There is. It is when we are at our ugliest that God’s love shines most beautiful. His Love is Tenacious. His Love is Unshakable. His Love is Unconditional. His love stands firm FOREVER. That’s God’s Word for you today.
