Do you ever ask God for “a sign”? David did. He wants it to be something that lets his enemies know that God is on his side. But I have a feeling it was for him, too. I believe David, like all of us, had moments of insecurity. I think there were times when he wondered where God was. I think there were times he wasn’t sure if God was still with him or not. I think there were some seasons in his life when he felt as if God was outright against him. So he asks God for a little reassurance. “Send me a sign of your favor.” I think he just wanted to know that God had His Eye on him. Not a bad prayer to pray.
Maybe you could use a sign like that. Maybe you’ve been going through a bit of a rough stretch and just need to know that God has His Eye on you. Maybe you’ve lost a battle or two, or experienced a setback or two, and you’ve been wondering what’s going on. Or maybe it’s been more than a moment. Maybe it’s been a season of life where it seems as if everything that can go wrong has gone wrong. Maybe it has not only felt as if God isn’t “there” for you. Maybe you’ve felt as if He’s been against you. He’s not, of course. God is FOR you. He’s WITH you. Just like He was with David. The battles around us aren’t indicators of God’s presence or lack thereof. They are just battles. They are hard moments that are so loud and consuming that they just make it hard to hear, see, or even feel God. But He’s there.
So, if you woke up this morning feeling a little insecure, it’s okay to pray the prayer that David prayed. “Send me a sign of your favor.” Perhaps God will slip a little something into your day that reminds you He’s still around. Maybe an unexpected blessing. Maybe an encouraging note or text, or call. Maybe a sunset or a rainbow or something that lifts your heart, and even though EVERYONE is enjoying it, you know it was for you. And if you fail to see a special sign today, here’s a thought: Spend the last few moments of your day thinking about Jesus. “For God so loved YOU that He sent His one and only Son…” Think about how much love it took for your Heavenly Father to do that for you. Christ’s coming was more than an Incarnation. It was more than an act of Atonement. It was a Sign of His Favor. One that He hopes you never, ever forget. That’s God’s Word for you today.
