Walking Through the Psalms
“Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you.” – Psalm 55:22 (NLT)
“Let Go and Let God”
“Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you.” – Psalm 55:22 (NLT)
“Let Go and Let God”
“Let go and let God.” Have you ever heard that statement? It’s one of the great statements you learn in the recovery process. And it encompasses a LOT. It means we have to let go of the lies we’re telling ourselves and let God lead us into truth. It means letting go of our old ways of coping with life and trusting God to heal and sustain us. It also means letting go of the things we can’t control and can’t change, and putting our faith in the grace, love, and sovereignty of God to handle those things we have no power over.
That last statement is the one I want to camp on for a few moments. I truly believe that it’s the heart of what David was getting at in our passage today. “Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you.” Burdens are those things we can’t control. Those things we don’t have any power over. Those situations that are out of our hands. If we get a flat tire, that’s not a burden. That’s a problem. Problems can be fixed, so we fix or change the tire. A burden is if I need a car but cannot afford one. That’s when I have to put it in God’s hands and let Him guide, direct, and control. Do you see the difference?
So that leads me to this. What burdens are you carrying today? What is lying heavy on your heart that you don’t have control over? What is it that is out of your hands, out of your reach, or out of your ability to fix that is distressing you today? Let go and let God. It doesn’t mean that you don’t stop praying, but it does mean that you confess to God that it is HIS to deal with and not yours. It doesn’t mean you no longer care, but it does mean you give up trying to control. Letting go and letting God is exercising faith and trusting God’s will, God’s way, and God’s timing instead of trying to impose your will, your way, and your timing. I know, it feels as if you're giving up. But you’re not. You’re giving it over. There is an eternity of difference between the two.
So what’s your burden today? A wayward child? A spouse who is an addict? An insurmountable amount of debt? A terminally ill parent? A friend who is on a path of self-destruction and is not listening to reason? These are BURDENS. And you weren’t meant to carry these all by yourself. Listen once more to David’s words when his circumstances were beyond his control. “Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you.” Do you believe that? Then let go and let God. That’s God’s Word for you today.
