Walking Through the Psalms
“He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.” – Psalm 40:2 (NLT)
“The Pits”
“He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.” – Psalm 40:2 (NLT)
“The Pits”
“That’s the pits.” That was one of our favorite phrases that my college buddies and I used to use. If your girl dumped you. “That’s the pits.” If your car broke down. “That’s the pits.” If you bombed on a test. “That’s the pits.” You see, any one of these events when you’re a college student constitutes a disaster. They can send you to hide in your room with the covers pulled up over your head. The world feels dark and overwhelming. “That’s the pits.”
For some of you, that may be a great description of where you are today. You’ve lost your job. You’re dealing with the rejection of a family member or friend. You’ve had yet one more expense come up, and you already didn’t have enough money to meet your bills. The weight of it all feels heavy. You’re emotionally exhausted. You feel as if you’re sinking in quicksand and have no way to pull yourself out. “That’s the pits.”
David’s words are exactly what we need today. “He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.” In our pit of despair, God sees us. But He does more than that. He reaches out to us. I love how David says, “HE lifted me out.” Sometimes, when we’re stuck in the mud and mire of life, we don’t have the ability or strength to pull ourselves out. But David promises that when we cry out to God, He hears our cry, and HE does for us what we can’t do for ourselves. God lifts us. God carries us. God settles our hearts, calms our fears, and brings peace to our souls. God STEADIES us. Our God knows first-hand all about the pits we encounter, and He’s not afraid to jump into our pit with us and lift us out.
Are YOU in the pits today? Does it feel as if your world is falling apart, or that you’re so overwhelmed that you’re stuck? Cry out to the Lord today. He understands your pain. He understands your loss. He understands how dark it all seems. He sees you. He hears you. And He is WITH you. Call to Him and He will climb into your pit and lift you out. Let Him steady your heart, strengthen your soul, and get you onto solid ground again. He’ll turn your “That’s the pits” into “That’s our God!” That’s God’s Word for you today.
