Walking Through the Psalms
“The godly offer good counsel; they teach right from wrong.” – Psalm 37:30 (NLT)
“Be Careful Who You Listen To”

“Be Careful Who You Listen To”
Be careful who you go to for counsel. I often tell my people here at church, “It doesn’t do you any good if you seek advice from people who are as dumb as you!” I know that sounds harsh, but it’s true. If I need help with my plumbing, why would I ask a friend of mine who is as ignorant as I am about home repair? This seems so simple, but you can’t believe how often I talk to people who do this. I see people all the time who are getting their relationship advice from people who have never had a healthy relationship in their lives! Don’t do that. EVERYONE will have an opinion for you. But another opinion is not what you usually need. What you need is GUIDANCE. For that, you might want to seek out someone who knows where they’re going!
In addition to that, David suggests seeking counsel from “godly” people. But how can you tell if they’re “godly?” Great question. Let me suggest a few litmus tests for that. Godly people are humble enough to tell you if they don’t know. People who feel as if they know everything about everything aren’t “godly.” They are just people who think they ARE God! Shy away from such people, even though they LOVE to tell you what to do. Godly people will measure their advice against the values of God and His Word. Listen very carefully to what I’m about to say to you. Not everything that is legal is necessarily moral. Just because you CAN do something, it doesn’t mean you SHOULD do it. Godly people will share with you what they believe God’s heart is on the matter, and not just what you can get away with.
Now here’s the biggest one. Godly people will tell you what you NEED to hear and not simply what you WANT to hear. Often, when we’re asking people for advice, we don’t really want advice. We want someone to give us permission to do what we already know we want to do. Those friends who will do that for you are not real friends. Neither are they godly. Godly advisors live in TRUTH. Even when the truth is tough for you to hear. And as much as we may not always want to receive it, we all need people in our lives who love us enough to tell us the truth. Need advice? Seek wise people. Seek godly people. Seek people who love God and you enough to be wonderfully and painfully honest. That’s God’s Word for you today.
