Walking Through the Psalms
“Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you.” – Psalm 37:5 (NLT)
“Committing & Trusting”
“Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you.” – Psalm 37:5 (NLT)
“Committing & Trusting”
Read the first half of that verse again. Now circle the second word of that sentence. “Everything.” Do you commit EVERYTHING you do to the Lord? Now, before you answer that, think about what that means. Everything means, well, everything! Think about it. Most of us have parts of our lives that we actually keep God out of. More accurately, we just don’t invite Him in.
Let’s be honest. How many of us actually get up in the morning and “commit” our job to God? Or our marriage? Or our parenting? Most of the time, I think we simply go to our job, do it the way we feel like doing it, and hope God will help us get a raise. Or, at least, help us not get fired! Same with our marriage. If we pray about our marriage at all, it’s more like, “God, could you PLEASE straighten out my spouse!” not, “Lord, help me to have a marriage that honors you.” Then there are those issues that we don’t talk to God about at all. Such as some of our habits. Or some of our attitudes. Or the way that we talk to people at times. Are THOSE committed to the Lord? I don’t think so.
Here’s the killer. Do you know WHY we don’t commit everything to God? We don’t trust Him. You see, “committing” our way to the Lord is the SURRENDERING of those things to the Lord. It’s to work as Jesus would work, love as Jesus would love, and forgive as Jesus would forgive. It’s to have habits that honor God, speech that would come from Jesus’ mouth, and attitudes that attract others to Him. Most of us have places where it’s just too fearful for us to do that.
But look at what David says. “Trust Him, and He will help you.” Think about it this way. What might happen in your marriage, or on your job, or in your life if you REALLY committed everything to Him? What if we gave up having to do it our way and truly did surrender to doing it His way? I know it would take some learning. I know it would take some humility. I know it would take some giving up control. But maybe, when we take our hands off, God can put His Hands on it. What is it that YOU need to yield to Him? Commit EVERYTHING to God. And as scary as that is, TRUST Him with it. He will help you. That’s God’s Word for you today.
