Walking Through the Psalms
“For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see.” – Psalm 36:9 (NLT)
“The Fountain of Life”

“The Fountain of Life”
I love this verse. In Genesis 1, we read how God “breathed into man the breath of life.” You know what? He still does! I’m not talking about just the oxygen that our lungs need. I’m talking about LIFE. It is in God that our lives find meaning and purpose. It is in God that we find acceptance and belonging. It is in God that we find healing and wholeness. It is in God that we find the true meaning of love. Everything that we truly live for is found in our Creator. HE gives them to us. He is our “Fountain of Life.”
Look at the last part of that verse, too. It’s so powerful. God is “the light by which we see.” Jesus didn’t declare Himself to be a way to truth. He declared Himself to BE truth! That means He sets the standard. He is the light by which we measure what truth really is. He is also the light by which we see life around us. It is through His Light alone that we can see people as they really are. His Light has a lens made of compassion, understanding, and empathy that our human eyes don’t have. When we look at people in His Light, we see them differently because His Light radiates with grace.
When we look at troubles or problems in our human light, they can seem overwhelming and unsolvable. But when we look at those same struggles in His Light, they seem smaller, doable, and manageable. God gives us His Light to look at ourselves as well. His Light helps to expose our sins, our flaws, and our attitudes that we are sometimes blind to. That Revealing Light can help us to see all the way to the darkest depths of our souls. His Light helps us to see the beauty in our own lives that we can’t see. In His Light, our sins become redeemable. In His Light we see our beauty and not just our blemishes. In His Light our meager ability becomes endless possibility.
Let’s make this verse our prayer today. “Father, pour yourself out upon us. Be our Fountain of Life. Bathe our souls in all of who you are. Be our Light today. Help us to measure all truth by you and you alone. Help us to see those around us through your compassionate eyes. Help us to see our problems in the light of your mighty power. Help us to see ourselves in the light of your love. In the precious name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.” That’s God’s Word for you today.
